Higher accuracy in CDN Finder

Several improvements to CDN Finder have made the tool more accurate in identiying which CDN a website is using. A major change is adding an extra step in the CDN identification process: reverse DNS lookup. This step helps in some cases where the domain does not point to the CDN in DNS with a CNAME record but with an A or AAAA record.

POP updates for CloudFront, CDN77, Gcore and Imperva

CloudFront has new edge locations in New Zealand and Mexico. Gcore has many new POPs planned, including in Toronto, Djibouti and Yerevan. CDN77 added a POP in Bucharest and Imperva has several new POPs planned for 2020 including Denver and Snatiago.

CacheFly adds new POP in US

CacheFly has launched a new POP in Iowa City, Iowa. The number of POP locations in the United States is now 14. Furthermore, CacheFly plans to launch new edge locations in Fortaleza (Brazil), Mexico City (Mexico) and Riyadh (Saudia Arabia) later in 2020.

Origin Storage is new in the list of CDN products. Some CDNs provide specific solutions for offloading origin servers and improving cache hit ratios. Limelight and Cachefly are first CDNs listed as offering an Origin Storage product.

CDNs typically expand their network on an ongoing basis. CDN Planet now shows where the CDNs will launch new edge locations in the near future. Per today, BaishanCloud, CacheFly, Fastly and Limelight are amonst the CDNs that have new POPs on the roadmap.

The network maps of Limelight, BelugaCDN, Bunny CDN, CacheFly, CDN77, Gcore and Medianova have been updated. Not because these CDNs all launched new POPs on the same day but because CDN Planet's listings were not uptodate.

Many changes to the CDN detection logic in CDN Finder, all to improve accuracy and deliver better results: add new CDNs (e.g. Vercel and Yottaa), remove old CDNs (e.g. ReSRC.it) and improve the detection of existing CDNs (e.g. KeyCDN, Stackpath and Akamai).

Show # CDNs with a POP in the country

The 'Content Delivery Networks by country' overview page lists all countries in the world and now shows for each country the # CDNs that have a POP there. This makes the page a more informative.

CDN Finder bookmarklet works again

The CDN Finder tool was initially released in 2012 and came with a bookmarklet to provide users with a simple one-click way to lookup the CDN behind a website while browsing the web. The new CDN Planet website and CDN Finder (May 2020) broke the bookmarklet and this is now resolved.

In-page CDN links on guide pages work correctly

The CDN guide pages contain extra information for some CDNs about the guide's topic. The in-page links in the CDN's table did not correctly link to the specific CDN's extra info. This has been resolved.

Implemented Content Security Policy

Content Security Policy (CSP) adds a layer of security to a website that helps to detect and mitigate certain types of attacks, including Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and data injection attacks. Although CDN Planet uses only a few third-party hosted scripts/services on the site, and from large and trusted organizations (Google, Twitter), we implemented CSP nevertheless (and other security headers too). Snyk's A+ rating in their website scanner confirms we did a good job.

Better user privacy: no more Disqus

The older blog posts had a few user comments at the bottom of the article, powered by Disqus. After reading up on the issues with Disqus and user privacy, we decided to simply remove Disqus from the site.

Do not track for Twitter widgets

CDN Planet uses the official Twitter widgets to make it easier for our users to share our content on this social media platform. Once we discovered the Do Not Track option, we immediately turned this on in all Twitter widgets.
